Tiger-tail is thin nylon-coated steel cable. It is strong, durable, and rigid. However it can kink, so be careful. Soft-flex can be used and is similar but much softer and less prone to kinking. Decide how much space you want between the beads, 2 inch spaces between each threaded bead is very fetching. Necklace can be long or short, personal preference prevails.

Snip a piece of tiger-tail to the length required. Slide a crimp bead and one part of the clasp onto the tiger-tail. Slide the tiger-tail back through the crimp bead, pull it tight, and then flatten the crimp bead with pliers so it stays. It can be a fiddly job but a very rewarding one. Prepare an area where you will not be disturbed and place all your bits and bobs onto a piece of card, this will help keep your lines level.

Shoes

Plain shoes are very easily decorated. A little glue a pair of tweezers and a steady hand can have you add bows, sequins, beads, pearls even fine link chains. Flowers can also be used, nuts and bolts if you like.

Charity shops are a great place to buy frocks. Check the buy and sell column in the newspaper for bargains. The plainer the dress, the easier you will find to decorate i.e. lace shoulder throw over. This summer Barbican Art Gallery showcases the work of Dutch fashion designers Viktor & Rolf. This is the first time in the United Kingdom that an exhibition has been devoted to this highly influential duo. Over the past 15 years Viktor & Rolf have taken the fashion world by storm with their particular blend of cool irony and surreal beauty.

The House of Viktor & Rolf presents each of the designer’s signature pieces from 1992 to now, shown in a specially commissioned and characteristically theatrical installation that dominates the entire Gallery. Highlights include pieces from Atomic Bomb, 1998–99, featuring dramatic mushroom cloud-like cushioned necklines and Russian Doll, 1999–2000, in which a single model was painstakingly dressed by Viktor & Rolf until she was gasping under 70 kilogrammes of exquisite haute couture. For the collection Bells, 2000-2001, models emerged from a smoke-filled space in clothes embroidered with hundreds of brass bells, so they were heard before they could be seen.

Drawing on the Dutch tradition of silver plating a baby’s first shoe as a keepsake, the climax of Viktor & Rolf’s Autumn/Winter collection of 2006–07, was a strapless wedding dress with a wide petticoated knee length skirt, silver plated, including even the bride’s bouquet.

If you already have some background in accessories design and want to attend a more advanced level course, the “Fashion Accessories Design Studio” course run by NABA from July 14th to July 24th will give you the possibility to get to know the world of luxury accessories to explore and identify the main European Luxury Accessory Brands and their  strategies on the luxury market; the product development in terms of image; the communication strategy; the Italian-specific making methods.

Are we looking for culture or cult? Gossip or facts? How can ‘lightness’ be seen or read without being empty? What does philosophy have to do with company strategies? Are you looking for a course that will enable you to experiment textiles and fabrics? In the Fashion Textiles and Fibres Studio course (an intermediate level course held on NABA campus from July 14th to July 24th) you will learn how the simplest finishing treatments can create great changes and improvements in the original fabrics.

If you already have some experience in the sector and are seeking for a more advanced course, maybe the Costume Decoration and Painting, developed by NABA in collaboration with Accademia Teatro alla Scala, can represent a good alternative. In this course students will have the opportunity to use the most traditional and ancient techniques that have been adopted at the Teatro alla Scala ever since for the decoration of the fabrics of both Opera and Ballet costumes. They will learn to recognise fabrics and to choose the most appropriate materials and techniques taking into account the evolution of costumes, how they are used on stage, washed and stored. This is an advanced level course taking place from 29th June to 10th July.

Introduction level courses are aimed at whoever wants to start exploring the world of Fashion, whereas Studio level and Advanced level courses are meant for Fashion college students at 1st,2nd, 3rd year and for professionals who would like to have a refreshing experience in a young international environment.
