A controversial figure during her reign as Prime Minster, thanks to the Cold War and Miner’s Strike, it is Lady Thatcher’s leather handbags that became a icon of her government. While she once described her handbag as the only safe place in Downing Street, her colleagues came to see them as symbolic of her philosophy.

Julian Critchley, one of Baroness Thatcher’s biggest Tory backbench critics remarked:

“Margaret Thatcher and her handbag is the same as Winston Churchill and his cigar.”

Critchley also coined the verb “to handbag” when he said:

“She cannot see an institution without hitting it with her handbag”,

While a closer ally, Nicholas Ridley once remarked in her absence at a cabinet committee meeting:

“Why don’t we start? The handbag is here.”

Lady Thatcher’s quality leather handbags are associated with a timeless style and an individualism which led them to being dubbed as ‘cool’. They even inspired handbag designers such as Marc Jacobs and one of her black leather handbags sold at auction for over $100,000 to a Scottish business man, after receiving 63 bids! In it was a signed note from Baroness Thatcher. The proceeds went to a breast cancer charity called Breast Cancer Care. After the auction Mrs. Thatcher remarked how pleased she was that her leather handbags had not only done her a good service in the Cabinet but also that they had such an influence and had raised so much money for a good cause.

Inspired by Baroness Thatcher’s luxury leather handbags, www.SexyHandbags.co.uk sells a wide range of fine quality leather handbags with the timeless style and individualism that this great lady would be proud of, at reasonable prices to suit all tastes and budgets.

SPRING FASHION 2008

Part Two – The Wedding Season

Spring is traditionally known as the season of blooming flowers, bright sunshine, and nice weather. It is also traditionally known as the wedding season – and for good reason. The pretty, newly blossomed works of nature make the perfect backdrop for wedding portraits; the mid-range temperatures allow both bride and groom to be flexible with their wedding wear, meaning they can focus on style rather than weather-bound comfort; and there is a general feeling of happiness associated with the bright colours and increased sunshine found after winter.

With the onset of spring in Australia, the latest wedding couture is out in full-force. This season’s wedding wear sees more metallic-based shades and a collection of floral embroidered gowns. A higher hem-line has also become more common, and dress-shapes like trumpet gowns and column gowns are in.

For soon-to-be brides, ready-made dresses are always a feasible option. But for the fashion-savvy and beauty-smart, personally tailored dresses are the only option. Silk fabric is the most common type of wedding wear material, and dresses can be accentuated and embellished with various types of laces and beads. For wedding dresses to genuinely look good and last long, silk of the highest quality should be obtained.

The wedding would not be complete without having the entire bridal party in high fashion. The bridesmaids’ dresses are usually the second most important piece of clothing that must be taken into consideration. This spring, the wedding colour themes are pastel-based with splashes of brightness. Like the bridal gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses have a shorter hemline and a more flowing-type design.

Melbourne designer fabric store d’Italia has the latest spring fashion material for bridal and wedding couture. Its range of the season’s newest prints and colours are directly imported from Italy and France, thus ensuring fabric of the highest quality. A selection of metallic-based shades for brides seeking a sleeker look is available, as well as an assortment of pastel-based fabrics for the more demure bridesmaid.

Dressmakers specialising in the latest wedding fashion are critical in the creation of the perfect wedding apparel. d’Italia offers one of Melbourne’s most selective wedding couture seamstress referral services. In-store recommendations and advice on the best fit and designs can also be found.

Climate change is a stark reality and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. I feel, as a designer, it’s our responsibility to bring these issues of international relevance across the society” said Puneet Gupta. A bridge between beautiful homes and inspiring home makers, the party witnessed the who’s who of fashion circuit enjoying to their best. Some of the guests seen chatting were Rohit Bal, Shibani Kashyap, Charu Parashar, Thenny, Raghavendra Rathore, Thenny, Nida Mahmood, Ramneek Paintal, Blossom Kochhar, Vijay Arora, Sanjay Kapoor, Varun Bahl, Ashima and Leena and many more.

Shyamal and Bhumika, best known for their India inspired collection, incepted their fashion journey in 2006 with Lakme Fashion Week. They have now successfully made a mark in the industry as they continue to mesmerize buyers and fashionst as with their Indian designs. Stylekandy.com caught up with the designers to know more about their preferences and design sensibilities. Ask them the reason for taking up fashion designing as a career and Shyamal reveals, “I wanted to become an architect since childhood. Probably it was the family influence since my dad belongs to designing field mom is a jewellery designer. Bhumika adds, “I am a NIFT graduate and when I met him we thought of launching our own in 2009.” The duo look India-wards for inspiration. “Our designs mostly incorporate an Indian element- hand embroideries and Indian handicraft. Even abroad, most of our clients are Indian, who actually crave for ethnicity in clothing. When we have to design for the western market, we keep global aesthetics in mind. Handicrafts are our forte”, explained Shyamal.

“When making western designs, we certainly refer to the global forecast. However, the ultimate decision is taken by our hearts. Despite the prediction we always decide on instinct and creativity”, uttered Bhumika. On a lighter note, we asked them what is the best compliment they have ever got. “Our collections have always been appreciated by people. It feels amazing when people email us or come and say that they love our work or they looked lovely in the designs. Also, there is no bigger compliment than feeling satisfied by one’s own designs!” they speak diplomatically in tandem. They feel that designer play a huge role in reviving art and craft. “Almost all designers use some kind of handwork. That ways, the art gets promoted and craftsmen are benefitted. It is true that exploitation of this class exists, more so in rural areas, but one should make a conscious effort to remain fair and just. We should not depend on the government to help them out” Bhumika opines. Their idea of style is very simple and sophisticated. “When I have to style my self, I make it semi casual. Probably a simple basic coat with a subtle, extra noticeable element in it, paired with denims which are comfortable.” When not designing, Shyamal like reading books and short stories. “I also design interiors since I like architecture.” Enjoy exploring various cultures through travelling and horse riding are some of the other hobbies the duo enjoy.

What is it about fashion that gets us all worked up into a trendy frenzy where we just have to have the latest designs from Christian Dior or Donatella Versace? Your irresistible passion for fashion can be unhealthy for your pocket. It is not uncommon for women to downsize on a loaf to that of a crumb on the dining table so she can wear clothes tagged with expensive designer labels.

Remember that fashion designers are not paying the price on the tag like you. If you can not afford Jimmy Choo shoes, fine, go find something similar, it makes sense. For every new creation donned on a boutique mannequin, you can bet there is a replica of that exact design to be found elsewhere at half the price. It is at times like this, if you are handy with a needle and cotton then the world is your oyster. All items of clothing is tailored made this way, so what makes Versace’s thread any different to yours to be able to charge extortionate prices

Updates on what is new in the fashion world, is brought to our attention via the catwalk. modelled by off balance out of rhythm long legged striding models who parade up and down dressed in Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood designs for the world to see?. Famous fashion designer creations are viewed by thousands and sadly a great percentage of that number will be wearing them also. Not wanting to burst your bubble but this is a sure sign to say that what you wear is not unique or original. Why not change all that now and become the new chic you, in style, in manner and personality. Clothes will always tell a story about the person wearing them. How many people have you criticised because of their clothes. Have you ever passed a silent comment under your breath because a person’s attire looks hideous? If so, then it does not have to be pointed out that these same assumptions from other people will apply to you also.

Are you an avid follower of fashion and find it costly to keep up with the latest trends, fret not make your own. Fashion magazines have all the gossip on who is wearing what. Keep a mental snapshot in mind of your favourite designer Versace dress, shoes or jewellery, this will help motivate you into becoming your very own personal fashion designer.

What you need to make a necklace.

Tiger-tail and crimp beads

Clasp

Wire cutters

Round nose, chain nose, or crimping pliers

8 4mm beads colour of your choice

Tiger-tail is thin nylon-coated steel cable. It is strong, durable, and rigid. However it can kink, so be careful. Soft-flex can be used and is similar but much softer and less prone to kinking. Decide how much space you want between the beads, 2 inch spaces between each threaded bead is very fetching. Necklace can be long or short, personal preference prevails.

Snip a piece of tiger-tail to the length required. Slide a crimp bead and one part of the clasp onto the tiger-tail. Slide the tiger-tail back through the crimp bead, pull it tight, and then flatten the crimp bead with pliers so it stays. It can be a fiddly job but a very rewarding one. Prepare an area where you will not be disturbed and place all your bits and bobs onto a piece of card, this will help keep your lines level.

Shoes

Plain shoes are very easily decorated. A little glue a pair of tweezers and a steady hand can have you add bows, sequins, beads, pearls even fine link chains. Flowers can also be used, nuts and bolts if you like.

Charity shops are a great place to buy frocks. Check the buy and sell column in the newspaper for bargains. The plainer the dress, the easier you will find to decorate i.e. lace shoulder throw over. Neck scarf plaited around the neck, choker tight or loose. Satin sashes circling the waist or sloping on the hip even coloured rope. Frayed rope neck pieces go well with a straw hat (no noose please). Hats is the icing on the cake for setting off an outfit; they can be decorated too match your dress shoes and jewellery.

Fashion is it not all about the actual clothing item; it is how you dress it up that makes an outfit.

The “Melancholic elegance”

Who needs those pessimistic economists when we have designers who remind us of the infamous market crash of 1929 through their long shiny crochets? When we have to go through this conservative era full of dull colored baggy dresses? Alberta Ferretti, with her glamorous yet melancholic and modest long dresses makes us travel back to the Charleston early 20s. Burberry, even though it is spring, transfers us all the way to autumn landscapes with dry leaves and earthy tones. Through a close look at the new Marc Jacobs collection, melancholy seems to dominate the new season right off the bat. While it’s spring outside, a tightened and buttoned up autumn like earth tones and silk scarves seems to be everywhere.

A stylist tip from me: The collections featured in this category, I love the large hats made of soft material, which cover half the face. Could it be a posh version of “emo” culture? Anyways, also keep an eye on those large cloth bags, which make us travel to different dimensions.

The “Trash variété”

Let’s put one thing straight. I am not blaming you if you want to make your stylistic choices based on 80’s trends from our long gone past. On the other hand, however, you should know that some of these spring collections and younger designers we saw this year could potentially make you change your mind. For example, Christophe Decarnin from Balmain brings pads back in fashion in a totally unique way. He puts them only on one shoulder as an intervention to a beautiful yet dull design. Chanel proposes another look, with a hint of nudity, using a nice skirt with rock pencil type accessories bundled with a nice “rack” (for a glam touch). Of course, Vivienne Westwood could not just stand without taking a stand in this trend with her black cloths and golden details. Sure it was risky, but oh-so very impressive. Are the 80’s back? Sure, but not in the fake businesslike meaning. This time, middle class plays a major role in making up the trend.

A stylist tip from me: If we exclude worn out jeans and a couple more minor details on dresses and tops, this trend yells out CAUTION. If you are not very sure of the result hold your horses. Keep the worn jeans, but leave out the zebra colored top. Keep pink, but stay away from the scene clothes overall. Halloween is long gone – at least for this year.

Trust me girls,

Sarah Pucci

Aus Mark asked:

It is said that a woman has three significant moments in her life: The day she was born, the day she gives birth, and her wedding day. With the first and second moments, sense of fashion and style is irrelevant. But with the third, looking and feeling your best is crucial! Unfortunately for most brides-to-be, the days leading up to the wedding can turn out to be some of the most stressful, and the end-result is far from perfect. However, it need not be so.

The most important aspect of the wedding is the bridal wear – the gown for the bride, dresses for the bridesmaid and mothers of the bride and groom, and the suits for the groom and bestmen. The number of fashion options available for wedding and bridal couture is endless, and the task of choosing the right styles can be daunting.

While off-the-shelf wedding dresses are often easy to find and purchase, the fit is rarely perfect. Therefore, the best advice for a bride-to-be is to have a dress tailor-made. Standard wedding dress materials include silk, chiffons, georgettes and laces (for accessories).

To look good is to feel good, and so the right match of material and style is important. d’Italia, a designer fabric store in Malvern, strongly recommends a visit to some top-end bridal boutiques to try on different styles before visiting the fabric store, for the following reasons:

•    to be sure that the style you had in mind does in fact suit your body shape

•    in case you might see some other styles you had not considered, which you should try on in case you end up liking them better

•    to compare the feel of different types of fabrics, such as soft, flowing crepe satins or stiffer, firmer dupion or duchess satins

•    to literally move – and we mean MOVE!- around in the styles to be sure you will be comfortable sitting, dancing, getting in and out of cars, etc…this is most important

•    to experience what it is like to wear different lengths of trains, as you may decide afterwards that you would prefer not to have one at all

•    to see what different shades of traditional bridal colours actually look like on your skin – such as white, silk white, ivory, champagne, oyster, etc.

d’Italia has in store the finest in bridal couture quality. It also has optional referral services to some of Australia’s best wedding couture seamstresses. Additionally, recommendations of best fit and styles are available in-store. For those stressed-out brides-to-be, visiting such a store is the best option available to obtain the perfect wedding dress.

d’Italia’s cloth comes directly from the same European manufacturers who supply to haute couture labels like Gucci, Armani and Escada. The available fabrics in-store are also perfect for the tailored creations for bridesmaids and mother-of-the-bride dresses. Referrals to seamstresses who specialise in evening wear and dinner gowns are also an available option.

Dexter James asked:

Almost all the artistic sections of human society have got a number of books written on them, be it film, painting or other crafts. Those books are read profoundly by the book lovers. Even the heaps of books written on fashion clearly indicate that it is not enough to wear fashion only, but its literature too needs some space in your wardrobe.

1.A to Zoe. Writer: Rachael Zoe

Grand Central Publishing, 192 pp.

Price: $25;

Though being a photo-collection of famous individuals and her friends, its eight chapters are full of numerous practical fashion tips for fashion lovers. The book deals with many how-to’s. The reader learns to select the right footwear for a particular dress. Further, the book very clearly describes the art of applying makeup, choosing the suitable jewelry and many other things. The presentation of fashion terms and tips using a glossary makes it too exciting.

2.That Extra Half Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between. Writer: Victoria Beckham

Harper Paperbacks, 384 pp.

Price: $20

Victoria’s writing debut, assisted by Hadley Freeman, is many inches( read miles) ahead of contemporary books on fashion. Her personal descriptions and her stylistic fashion tips make this book unmatched. This is not a collection of rules and advices. Rather, it gives a wide array of inspirational fashion guidelines to almost all age-groups.

3.Glamour Girls. Writer: Patrick McMullan

PMC Publishing, 316 pp.

Price: $75

It is basically a photo album of famous and beautiful ladies rather than being a book. This celebrity photographer has photographed more than 1000 sexy ladies in the world who have given a new dimension to the world of fashion. Uma Thurman and Angelina Jolie are only two of them. These photographs, added with texts, arrange for us a fairytale journey in the world of celebrity fashion.

4.The Black Dress. Writer: Valerie Steele

Collins Design, 112 pp.

Price: $20

The fact that how black has survived through the course of history, and has remained always the most practical choice of fashion lovers, seems to be a definite inspiration for the writer. This is a visual translation of this “black” trend. He has worked a lot to present a vibrating collection of classic stills from movies, designer sketches and photographs of celebrities describing the charm and greatness of black. The collection of quotes on black is an added feature.

5.Forever Cool: How to Achieve Ageless, Youthful and Modern Personal Style for Men and Women. Writer: Sherrie Mathieson

Clarkson Potter, 256 pp.

Price: $23

Probably the most real, it comes with a truckload of tips and advices for all who have crossed their 40’s. The book contains no photo of famous personalities but shows the people of locality in an elegant manner. The book compares a pre-grooming photo of a real life model to his/her post-grooming one illustrating the difference. The writer gives simple but exciting tips which are more than enough to any middle-aged person to come back on the right track of fashion.
