Amanda King asked:

Many dream of entering into the glamour of a fashion career. Most dreams of such careers as fashion model or fashion designer. However a career in fashion merchandising can be very rewarding and self satisfying. It may not be easy to become a fashion merchandiser however with the right training and experience it can come about without much trouble for those who are willing to dedicate themselves to their career.

You might have a natural flair for being a fashion merchandiser. You will normally know if such a career is right for you. You may have felt it from a very young age as you have entered into dress shops or other clothing retail outlets. You have admired the way the clothes were put on display and respected the sales girl at the counter. Your friends may have admired your taste in clothing and frequently asked for your advice on what type of clothing they should wear.

If you are thinking of a career in fashion you might also want to think of ways in which you can be educated in the finer details of fashion merchandising. Often if you want to get into the high end of the market you may be expected to have a degree, diploma or at least a certificate to indicate that you have studied some of the more complex issues related to fashion merchandising.

From a perspective of fashion you might study areas of fashion designs, running a fashion boutique, textiles and the history of fashion. From a business perspective you might learn how to manage a business, including accounting, analyse market trends and how to make sales. You might even study human resources so that you might know how to recruit, train and manage your staff. Personal development courses will also be of interest and most beneficial in an area which concerns customer relations.

If you are taking fashion merchandising seriously you will want to keep up with the latest trends in the world of fashion. The world of fashion is in a constant state of change. Perhaps the most significant change over the last ten years is the introduction of the internet. Online marketing has become vital. Even those who do most of their work offline will normally need to know something of what is happening online. Many fashion gurus are now using the internet to assist them in their occupation. Indeed internet marketing has opened up a completely new world of how fashion is promoted and sold.

A career in fashion can open up many doors to other related occupations. One such occupation is that of being a webmaster. By webmaster it is meant that the owner promotes a website. It can be quite easy for you to set yourself up on a website as long as you make yourself aware and educated in emarketing. On the internet you can display your own products or you can become an affiliate marketer and promote other people’s products. There can be a lot of satisfaction in setting up your own website and displaying your own range of products or products owned by those you represent.

To get started with fashion merchandising on the internet it is good to become aware of available resources. There are sites that can provide you with an online education, sites that can provide you with the necessary infrastructure and sites, which will enable you to promote your products online. You can even extend yourself from the internet to off line activities and promotions. There is a lot of variety and a lot of opportunity to extend yourself into a lucrative and satisfying online fashion merchandising career.

Like many college graduates, design school grads will beg the same question upon graduation: what now? You are ready to embark on the next phase in life: a career. But what should you expect with your degree? The following provides tips, facts and advices for new fashion design school grads.

Before you start your career in fashion design, there are a few things you should know. Almost one-fourth of fashion designers are self-employed, job growth is slower than average and the fashion industry is fiercely competitive. Luckily, the demand for unique clothing, footwear and accessories has always been strong, and there will always be a need for new and upcoming designers.

Also, in the fashion design industry, landing a dream job and moving up the design school ladder is extremely difficult and can be painfully slow. Fashion designers have to deal with low job turnover due to the fact that few jobs ever open up. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, fashion design jobs are most available in mass market clothing design, which involves design pieces for many department stores and chain retail stores. Careers designing for specialty boutiques and private, expensive clothing stores are hard to find and are only given to the best of the best in the world of design.

There are many different careers for fashion design school graduates, however. Commercial and industrial designers, interior designers and graphic designers have better job outlooks and a less-competitive work environment than fashion designers. Although their careers are still artistically competitive, they are able to live in more diverse areas, be self-employed or work for a firm while enjoying a less cut-throat industry. Most designers in these industries enjoy a decent salary once they have established themselves.

These are just a few options fashion design school graduates have to choose from. Every degree outlook is different and can be applied in many diverse ways. The good news is that the world of design continues to grow and becomes more in demands as fashion and creativity grows and evolves.

Tania Machowska asked:

Now that winter is firmly out of the way, and people are looking ahead to what they will be taking on holiday with them this summer, it’s time to look at what the latest colours and designs are for this season. The most dominant colours this season are ultramarine, apricot, silver and gold, as well as neon tones such as blue, yellow and purple. Combination colours are also high on the agenda, with monochrome black and white prints dominating the trends, and dark navy accompanied by red.

This season’s must-have accessory is the over-sized handbag. No longer will you have to squeeze your bare essentials into a tiny clutch bag, now you can take everything you need, including the kitchen sink! Summer 2007 will also see the dominance of the dress, be it jersey, floral, denim or linen, and all in a variety of different lengths; micro mini, tunic, on the knee or full length. The style of the dress is also very important with Empire line, halter necklines, puffball, tulle, belted and wrap dresses, all making an appearance on the scene. However, the most dominant styles of dress are those with a hemline just above the knee, worn either alone, or teamed with skinny trousers, leggings or coloured tights; and the big season hitter, the maxi dress. These dresses go all the way down to the floor, and have a full-skirted look. Flamenco ruffles, flounces, pleats and frills are used to accentuate many of these dresses, look out for what suits you best. Make sure though that you can wear this look without appearing swamped by fabric! For those who can carry it off, this is an extremely comfortable and attractive addition to your summer wardrobe. If you aren’t someone who suits the maxi dress, another option is the popular feature of illusion hemlines. These are dresses which have false hem illusions created by mesh, lace or pastel flesh toned hems that are added to make the length of the dress look shorter.

Balloon sleeves are another key look, with elbow sleeves in puffed-up shapes a dominant look, bell, lantern, trumpet or kimono sleeves, are all making an entrance, and it’s up to you to find out which suits you best. They can vary immensely from a slight puff, to a full out mass of material so you definitely have to know which you prefer. Smocks are another top look for this season, with a huge emphasis on the folklore look, as well as those with Slav inspired folk prints, plain solid colours and abstract unusual designs. As the season heads towards autumn, you will start to see the trends moving towards a theme that will be very big in the coming months, lace. This will appear both as trimming and as the main focus of garments both in the summer season and in the autumn. High-waisted trousers are another developing trend as the season heads towards autumn, with androgynous tailored looks being a dominant theme in autumn 2007.

Michelle Bery asked:

When you dream as a child about what you want to be when you grow up, fashion designer ranks high on the list for many who envision a glamorous lifestyle and a chance to influence the way society dresses. Being a fashion designer certainly does come with its benefits; but it is also a career that requires a balance between creativity and skill.

We need only to turn on the television or flip the pages of a magazine to see how fashion influences our culture. The way we dress on a daily basis, the clothing we run to the stores to purchase, all depend on what’s popular on the runways. And what’s popular on the runways is created by fashion designers. A fashion designer creates a look and makes it happen. But what people don’t see, as models strut the runway wearing the latest designs, is the enormous amount of work and skill that it takes to get to that bright shining moment.

A fashion designer must not only be skilled in the manufacturing of clothing – including knowledge of textiles and expertise in sewing – but also in sketching and drawing their designs. The savvy fashion designer understands color and how to use it to capture the essence of their design.

Becoming a fashion designer means attending a reputable school that teaches design, sewing, textiles, and the like. It is imperative that you learn the fundamentals of design before you add your own creativity and flair. Even more important, however, is the working knowledge that you can gain working as an intern or apprentice in an established shop. Working alongside a fashion designer who can give you firsthand experiences and help you build your portfolio is incredibly important to becoming a fashion designer. It’s all about experience. So take all that you can from school but put your skills to use – everywhere and anywhere that you can. A strong portfolio that demonstrates your talent and desire to work in the industry will go a long way to helping you realize your dream of becoming a fashion designer.

Paul P. Duxbury asked:

You may have the talent and the unique sense for fashion but without structured training, you might well fail to truly understand and explore many of your gifts. Some wouuld argue that, one’s success in the field of fashion relies partly on your choice of school. In this article, we will provide you with the basic criteria you can use in exploring your options in terms of the various fashion design schools.

This is one of the main considerations that will have a large impact on your choice of Fashion Design School. The sad truth with fashion design schools is that they are so few in number and amongst this relatively small number there are a handful of Fashion Design Schools that can truly deliver efficient education.

As with so many other things, the lower cost fashion design schools can only be considered of value if they can give effective learning. However, this is rarely the case though because, with lower fees, generally comes a lower quality of education. Primarily the reason is that these schools cannot afford to employ the quality of professional teachers. Therefore, they settle for people who can teach at a basic level but who do not necessarily have the professional knowledge and skill to be truly effective teachers. If you do your research you will be able to find some well-performing fashion design schools that will suit your means.

In the fashion industry, it is well recognized that certain Fashion Design Schools specialize in certain areas and you need to be aware of this when making your choice.

The first thing you would want to do is to study the nature of the fashion design school. What fields does it cater for? What courses does it focus on? What is their main emphases in delivering their courses or programmes? These are among the many things that you should give serious consideration to because the fashion design school that you choose will have a large influence on your career in the future.

One of the best determinants for your choice of school is ensuring that you know their reputation. A qulity fashion design school is one that makes itself renowned in the world of fashion through their teaching and also through what former students say and do. Does the school you are considering participate in fashion design school competitions? This would be a very clear indication of fostering excellence in the industry and the commitment of the Fashion Design School to the very highest levels of education.

To ensure that you are able to truly develop your abilities you must therefore find a school that focuses on your own field of specialization.

You need to consider the overall Curriculum which the school offers. As with college education, you must also check out the curriculum offered by the schools of fashion design that you are considering. To do this properly you should compare the curriculum from various schools and decide which you think would best fit in with your own preferences.

You also need to ask about and consider the ratio of teacher to students. The size of a class per teacher can indicate two things; the school is either too popular or it is underfunded. The reality is that, the larger the size of the class the more likely that the education provided will suffer. It is often better to choose between schools with relatively fewer students since this will normally indicate that the teachers can better focus on the individual students.

These are only some of the major points which you need to consider in making your choice of fashion design school. As for your final decision well it has to feel right to you because it is an important decision that you are making which can have a major impact on your future and your career.

Remember when job-hopping was anathema? Well, you better take today’s hot new non-traditional career advice . . . start job-hopping!

Things have changed. The economy is booming, Younger job seekers are much more ambitious and almost instinctively understand that if they want to get ahead,. . . if they’re heading for the top, they have to job hop.

It’s really all part of the 21st Century job market and the dramatic changes that have occurred especially since 9/11 and Katrina. The old-fashioned job search approaches simply don’t work anymore. If you’ve been busy writing a traditional resume and then mass distributing it to job sites, job listings, a bunch of companies, some agencies and recruiters . . . well, you already know what I mean.

You’re probably sitting around nervously waiting for the phone to ring. Or hoping today’s mail will bring that priceless invitation to an interview instead of the more usual TNT (thanks-but-no-thanks) letter.

Non-traditional career advice is the solution to your job search dilemma. It makes you get in tune with today’s sophisticated job marketplace. You need to understand the employers aren’t interested in what you used to do for someone else (as outlined in your resume). They expect you to come forward with some understanding of the corporate goals are.

And they are impressed when you’ve done your research and come up with an ability to address your next boss’ personal requirements. This evidence of your commitment to excellence goes much further than a resume. It’s just another piece of non-traditional career advice.

So does a commitment to job-hopping. Curtis Crawford, author of “Corporate Rise: The X Principles of Extreme Personal Leadership,” advises that the more versatile you are, the more likely you are to move up. What’s more, he recommends:

1. Don’t be afraid to be visibly ambitious. In the past, ambition was confused with arrogance and ruthlessness–getting to the top at any cost. Ambition is achieving your goal the right way–honestly, ethically, all the while gaining the respect of your subordinates, peers and management.

2. Avoid getting stuck in one job. Avoid becoming a specialist which means you’re pigeonholed as being able to do only one thing well. That specialist thinking flew years ago–but not anymore.

3. Make significant contributions. Just moving through different jobs is not enough. Take jobs that provide platforms for you to make significant contributions. It means getting involved in critical areas such as product development, financial management, technological improvements, or improving production or distribution.

This departure from old-fashioned thinking is just one of the many exciting pieces of non-traditional career advice. It’s part of the amazing new alternative thinking that is consistent with expectations in today’s job marketplace!

Tony Jacowski asked:

A thing of beauty is a joy forever! This thought holds complete significance in the fashion industry. It is an exciting industry that attracts many brilliant, ambitious, creative, talented, committed and hard working people. Success in the fashion industry calls for an ultimate passion and enthusiasm to achieve set targets. The desires to create, see, explore and appreciate beauty must be inherent. It’s a creative field and one needs to possess as well as acquire certain skills that are indispensable, such as thinking creatively beyond the obvious and the ability to carve a niche in almost all the possible projects by making it different yet stunning than the previous one.

Careers in the fashion industry revolve around beauty. In order to be successful in this field you should have the unquenchable thirst for beauty in its all-relevant forms. Changing fashion statements determine the change in the trend of clothing, ornamenting and above all, adopting new ways of carrying oneself.

It is the style that brings elegance with a difference in different designs. Style is an individual aspect. No two people can have exactly the same style statement because every person has a unique style of their own. Therefore, the concepts related to fashion are also different. Some people feel that fashion is the passion of the slaves and that is why they try to dress and carry themselves in a manner similar to that of models walking on the ramp. This thought is challenged by a different thought; those who go against the fashion trends are themselves the slaves of the fashion.

No matter what different concepts abound, fashion is a career industry that is never going to fade. There are immense opportunities in this field, as you can opt for any of the following job prospects pertaining to your areas of interest: modeling, catwalk choreography, fashion photography, designing, merchandising, make-up artists, hair styling, and accessory designing.

Modeling: Modeling is a promising career that requires having a certain confidence and a pleasing appearance that needs to confirm to the basic standards of fashion designers. One needs to have an inclination towards glitz and glamour, as it is part and parcel of this industry.

Catwalk Choreography: Catwalk Choreography aims at training models to present their attire in an appealing and professional way. Designers hire talented choreographers because they know that every movement with the background music counts on the ramp. It can make or break an entire fashion show.

Fashion Photography: Fashion Photography is a very demanding career that requires the utmost dedication, sincerity, sensitivity and at the same time objectivity towards the subjects. It is the job of the fashion photographer to present clear expression to almost all the possible facets of style such as fabric, design, designer, model and the like.

Fashion Designing: Fashion designing is one of the most promising careers in fashion industry. It needs to have the ability to think, comprehend and implement the latest and original ideas in order to be successful in this field. Designers can specialize in apparel, textile, accessory designer and many more.

Fashion Coordinator: A fashion coordinator is responsible for coordinating fabrics and trimmings, quality and design. He/she needs to keep a constant track of production schedules and needs to be aware of the status of buyers’ orders.

There are several career options that need to be explored by aspiring students. You can certainly excel in this field provided you believe in the proverb; “work is worship” and have immense potential to rise and make your mark in the fashion industry.

Victor Epand asked:

I can’t speak for the magazine business, but as a former newspaperman, I can tell you how newspapers gather information. The first thing a new reporter does on a beat is introduce himself to all the principle people on that beat. For example a reporter covering a federal courthouse would introduce himself to the chief judge in the district and to the US Attorney for the district, also to the clerk of the courts and the head of the US Marshal Service in that courthouse. In short, find out who the movers and decision makers are and make yourself known to them.

If I were covering the fashion world for a fashion magazine, I would first learn who the newsmakers were. IT might be a particular fashion house, a designer, or buyers for the important stores. Learn who they are and make yourself known to them. Also let them know that you are interested in any new developments in their fields and are willing to learn as much as you possibly can. You might also find out that many of the people in the fashion industry employ public relations firms to get the word out, so introduce yourself to the major PR people.

Depending on what your position is on your magazine, you might ask for help from some of the senior writers or editors. My practice was always to ask for help, no matter what the situation was. Sometimes people will see you as a threat to their jobs so they might refuse to help you, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Keep an open mind and be creative in your search for information and for contacts.

Generally speaking, you are a journalist if you write for a newspaper, magazine or other kind of journal that reports the news regularly. According to American tradition and constitutional law, the profession of journalism is separate from and independent of government regulation or registration. This is important because it is felt within the journalism profession that once we submit to being registered and licensed by government, then the government that we are obliged to report on can then decide who is and who isn’t a journalist.

That means if I begin to report unfavorable facts about the way the government is doing business, they would have the power to revoke my registration and silence my journalistic voice. We fight hard to keep governments from trying to register us and to regulate us. We are governed only by laws of libel. Generally in this country you are a journalist if you report and write the news for a regularly published newspaper or magazine.

Various news organizations issue identification cards for their own employees and that should be enough. We steadfastly resist government’s attempt to regulate us.For if we allow them to regulate and license us, we also allow them to revoke that license and to silence us.I know I have repeated this principle several times, but it is important enough to bear repeating. If your weekly newspaper says you are a legitimate employee of them, engaged in writing and reporting the news, that should be enough.

A journalist is a person who reports and writes the news. He is usually an employee of a newspaper, or works under a contractual arrangement with a newspaper. The term is broad, it can include peple who report for magazines or for radio and TV stations. To get an exact definition go to a dictionary.

The freedom of the press and freedom for journalists to report the news is not a universal freedom. In many countries when a dictator or a tyrant takes over the first thing he does is get control of the newspapers. There are just some of those people out there that think can get away with some of the stuff that they are doing. Most of them think that if they can get control of the newpapers then they can have them print what they tell them too with death to them of a loved one. So most of the time a lot of journalist will stay clear of some topicas where others belive in freedom of speech.

Working in the fashion industry:

When you work in the fashion industry you get golden invites to a lot of exclusive events with all the stars and usually get to party fabulous with all the great drinks and bubbly champagne because a party is not a party without a specialty drink. In the fashion industry, they have the head of marketing and PR and they usually develop friendships with flower shops, major magazine companies, boutiques, salons, clothing stores and everything and every place, etc.

The fashion industry deals with models, make-up, fashion and style. They have editors and editors-in-chief just to make sure that everything is where it’s supposed to be which is supposed to be a personification of over the top glamour. They also have assistants and other workers that make-up guest lists for events and have event designers, and designers of all kinds and all stars.

Note: When working in the fashion industry, there are no tears in fashion, and gum chewing is definitely unacceptable which is considered to be very unprofessional and you must always keep yourself groomed at all times and really pay close attention to your appearance.

Fashion week: Fashion week always kicks into high gear.

However, there are many benefits while working in the fashion industry, especially if you work for a major magazine company, you get a lot of free stuff that designers send over to the company and goodie bags, and you get to score a lot of fun stuff and tickets to get into events and backstage passes, you even get a press pass for every beauty event there is in order for you to interview the models and the models on the come up just so you can write a piece and an article for your job and including for fashion week and if you’re a fashion intern, you get to live in one of those fabulous loft apartments depending on the location you came from or your job location.

Know this: When you’re in the fashion industry, you end up having a clear understanding of how you can add fashion into your life. I myself is a person who really lives for fashion and style and I call myself a true fashionista and knowing what and what not to wear just like the show on TLC.

In those fashion jobs, they usually have the wardrobe closet with all of those fashion samples that you can test out and you get to go backstage to talk to the models because in fashion, you must always work hard by trying no to mess up, but at the same time, be able to take constructive criticism without any fuss or tears because know one wants to have a cry baby on staff.

Fashion week: When fashion week looms in, fashion week is almost like looking into a crystal ball.

When first getting a job in fashion: The first day on the job is kind of an intense time to be late, so you must always keep on with communication at all times whether you’ll be late or not which shows responsibility on your behalf and be happy with the work and the position that you get because it’s considered a great opportunity with benefits that are great, no girl could possibly say no.

Now a fashion assistant does all the shopping and picks up the outfits and accessories for the necessary shoots and the beauty snoops are the ones who do the on the fly interviews, checks out what’s new on the market and acting as an insider without anyone else really knowing about them, they usually create a story that is writeable with enough information that their bosses can read and always have to put the clothes neatly in the bag after picking up the outfits and accessories and if you’re an intern on an internship in the fashion industry, it’s all about learning to become the best.

Now there’s a lot of competition in the fashion industry because it’s really tough and you need to be more thick skinned than what you really are. One of the most important things in the fashion industry is to have a party weeks before fashion week and need to make sure they have enough stars and celebrities at their parties for the purpose of the press.

And last, but not least, when working in the fashion industry, you must be capable of handling a job and meeting deadlines by completing every job successfully with a lot of confidence within yourself because at the end of the day or week, you’ll be rewarded for all of your hard work with all of those fabulous items and goodies which is the best.
